Introducing: Concoction 'Mix Your Own' Shampoo

When I first heard about Concoction, a new professional standard shampoo brand which allows you to mix your own formular I was very sceptical. For only £12.95 you can choose a shampoo base out of Lemon and Verbena, Bakhour, Rosemary Mint or Black Pepper and Citrus, then add up to two 'super serums' out of 'Beautiful Brunette' for brunettes, 'Curl Me up' for curly hair, 'Back To Your Roots' for soothing scalp care, 'Gimme More Moisture' which has moisturising properties, 'High Definition Blond' for blonds, 'Ravishing Red' for red heads, 'Thermo Straight' to add protection to people who like to use hot styling tools on their hair and 'Turn Up The Volume' which is a volumising serum.

I really did not think the serums could work, professional shampoos are so carefully formulated for example just to be able to choose different serums to go into a generic base, but as Concoction offered to send me a bottle mixed up to my specifications I decided I might as well give it a go.

I went for the Black Pepper and Citrus base with the 'Curl Me Up' and 'Gimme More Moisture' serums. When I squeezed the clear, but lovely smelling shampoo into my palm and lathered it into my hair I was still sceptical. It was just another shampoo. However, once I had started to rince the suds out my hair felt silkier wet than usual, and this was before conditioner. I'm not so sure about the curling properties of the curly hair serum, as my hair had the same naturally, slightly defined waves as ever, but as a moisturising shampoo that smells amazing this is fantastic, and has taken up residence in my shower.

I know the packaging is not much at the moment, but they have promised me they have something quite slick and fancy in the works. Aside from the packaging, my only other qualm with this service is that I like to use corresponding shampoos and conditioners together; I refrained from buying a Bumble & Bumble shampoo the other day reduced to £3 because I could not get the conditioner to match. I think Concoction need to launch a conditioner option too to really become a viable product. If they launch a conditioner I think I might order again, getting the conditioner too and maybe switching out the curl serum for one for red coloured hair.

Will you be mixing your own Concoction shampoo?
